Montagne del Veneto

The Veneto Mountains

From lake Garda to the Cansiglio, the Veneto mountains ripple steeply downward from the Dolomites to the pre-alpine plateaus and the soft undulations of the hills, forming a great arc across the north that encloses the eastern extension of the Po’ valley plain facing the Adriatic gulf. A mountain profile appears on the horizon of all Veneto cities and constitutes a daily presence in the lives of their inhabitants. By way of scrupulously selected images of great symbolic value, this book tells the story of the Veneto mountains. It reveals the fascination they have exerted since remote times, but also a certain inaccessible grandeur that inspires the desire to challenge and conquer them. Different natural and environmental situations are brought to light, as well as the dense network of relations that, since antiquity, integrate the coast, plain, hills and towns with alpine and pre-alpine territories, giving life to a complex and multi-faceted anthropic settlement. An exemplary combination of early illustrations and contemporary photographs conveys the unique and fascinating characteristics of human society as it formed at the foot of these rocky giants: the traditional economies tied to summer pasturing, to the forests, to the extraction of stone and minerals; the diverse methods of construction and ways of living; the sites sacred to religious observance; the drama of war; the birth of alpinism and tourism – in short, the lives of these hardy mountain populations.
