Sullo sfondo della guerra tra l'Inghilterra e la Francia rivoluzionaria alla fine del Settecento si narra la formazione del giovane aiuto navigatore Nathaniel Drinkwater a bordo del cutter Kestrel.

1792. La Rivoluzione Francese, lo spettro della ghigliottina e la lotta per la conquista della Manica fanno da sfondo a un'avventura senza sosta, nella quale Nathaniel Drinkwater è destinato a una missione pericolosa e segretissima a bordo del Kestrel, un cutter da dodici cannoni. Drinkwater non solo affronterà ammutinamenti e pericolosi salvataggi, ma dovrà anche vedersela con gli intrighi del misterioso e insolente agente segreto Edouard Santhonax, il quale tenta in ogni modo di volgere a favore della Francia le sorti del conflitto in corso, che culminerà con la storica battaglia di Camperdown.
