Timothy J.F. Sex è nato nel Surrey nel 1934. Dopo aver prestato servizio nella ROyal Navy ha partecipato a numerose regate oceaniche a vela tra le quali la Bermuda Race e varie Transatlantiche. Ha svolto un ruolo importante nella diffusione dello sport velico in Gran Bretagna sia scrivendo stimolanti articoli sull'arte marinaresca sia partecipando a quasi tutte le manifestazioni britanniche.
