The ascent of Mont Ventoux

Edizione critica con testo latino, italiano e inglese. La montagna stessa, proprio come l’io, si smaterializza: il Ventoso diventa montagna di parole da scalare a tavolino, oggetto di una strategia che passo dopo passo lo consuma, e si fa visibile nella lettera soltanto per meglio divenire invisibile perché la sua più vera, più alta visibilità consiste nell’invisibilità. Mutando incessantemente nel corso della lettura e sdoppiandosi di continuo, il Ventoso, verso la fine del testo, vede la sua identità definitivamente minacciata; è ridotto ad un mucchietto di terra «alto neanche mezzo metro rispetto all’elevatezza dell’animo umano» (§ 33). La lettera del Ventoso non è soltanto un testo chiave dell’opera di Petrarca. Fam. IV, 1 rappresenta in effetti anche il punto di partenza assoluto per ogni storia e teoria della coscienza del paesaggio.

Just like the self, the mountain dematerialises and Ventoux becomes a mountain of words to be climbed on paper, the focus of a strategy that consumes it step after step, only becoming visible in the letter to become more invisible because its truest and greatest visibility consists in being invisible. Continually changing during the reading and constantly becoming twofold,towards the end of the text Mont Ventoux sees its identity permanently threatened as it is reduced to a pile of earth scarcely a cubit high compared with the range of human contemplation» (§ 33). The Ascent of Mont Ventoux is not only a key text of Petrarch’s work. Fam. IV, 1 also represents the mandatory starting point for the history and the theory of landscape consciousness.
